WHAT IS A DENTAL EMERGENCY?
Emergency appointments are reserved for cases such as:
Avulsion – a tooth being knocked out
WHAT DO I DO IF MY TOOTH IS AVULSED (KNOCKED OUT)?
If the avulsed tooth is a baby tooth it should NOT be replanted as this can risk damage to developing permanent tooth, seek immediate emergency dental treatment.
In the case of an avulsed permanent tooth:
Locate the tooth and pick it up touching only the crown of the tooth (which is normally visible in the mouth), avoid the root as this can affect the success of replantation
If the tooth is dirty, gently clean it under cold running water, be sure to do this quickly i.e. no longer than 10 seconds if possible
If able replant the tooth as soon as possible after avulsion once clean, bite down on a handkerchief to maintain the position of the replanted tooth and seek immediate emergency dental treatment
If unable to replant the tooth it is best preserved by storing it in the buccal sulcus i.e. positioned between the cheek and the molar teeth, be careful not to inhale the tooth. If unable to store in the mouth, place the tooth in a dental storage medium if on hand or milk, do not store the tooth in water
Seek immediate emergency dental treatment as the longer the tooth is avulsed the lower the success of replantation
HOW MUCH WILL THE VISIT COST?
The cost of an emergency dental appointment will vary depending on what treatment is required. Your dentist will discuss any anticipated fees at the time of treatment.
